Castle of Vianden

Vianden Castle was constructed from the 11th to the 14th century on the foundations of a roman fort and a Carolingian refuge. It is one of the largest and most beautiful feudal residences of the romanesque and gothic periods in Europe. Until the beginning of the 15th century it was the seat of the influential counts of Vianden who could boast their close connections to the Royal Family of France and the German imperial court.

In 1820, under the reign of King William I of Holland, the castle was sold piece by piece, and as a result, it fell into a state of ruin. It was a pile of rubble until the family of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg transferred it to State's ownership in 1977. Since restored to its former glory, the castle now ranks as a monument of not only regional, but European importance.

SEO - Pumped-Storage Water Station

The pumped-storage power plant in Vianden has been one of the main attractions in north-eastern Luxembourg for several decades. The natural conditions offered by the Our Valley have enabled the construction of a pumped-storage power plant capable of storing excess energy and producing the missing energy.

With a capacity of 1,300 MW, this power station is one of the largest in Europe.

The visitor gallery and underground power station can be visited every day from 10 am to 4 pm.
From Easter to September from 10am to 6pm.

The visitor gallery has been completely renovated. Through this exhibition, interested parties can find all the information on the Vianden power plant as well as on two key current topics, namely climate and energy.

If you are interested in a guided tour, simply download the application form and send it back by fax or e-mail or complete the online form (click here).

In general, the visit lasts 2 hours (film, visit gallery, underground power station, possibly upper basin with bus/ own car).

Guided tours for groups (min. 10 people) are only possible upon written request and at least two weeks in advance:

The copper mine

1.5 km away from Stolzembourg are the remains of the former copper mine. For more than 500 years, the copper-bearing veins of the "Klangbaach" have attracted several investors to Stolzembourg, although it is far from any industrial district.

Around 1856, 1882, 1901 and 1938 was the dismantling considerable. The biggest problem was always the water which flooded the galleries over and over again. The geological path permits the evaluation of the remains by putting back the mining site in its historical, geological and environmental state. In recent years, a part of the underground galleries has been made accessible to the interested public. 50 meters below ground, the visitors learn about the difficult degradation of the copper ore.
